Following five and a half hours of deliberation that extended late into the evening, the Sunnyvale Planning Commission approved plans for the proposed Sunnyvale California Temple on Monday, September 28, 2026. The approval grants a use permit for construction of the 38,805-square-foot temple, along with two accessory structures measuring 1,422 and 2,330 square feet at the rear of the property. Commissioners also granted a variance allowing the temple’s steeple and spire to reach 129 feet—89 feet above the city’s 40-foot building-height limit.

Temple Site
On August 28, 2023, the location of the Sunnyvale California Temple was announced as a 4.73-acre site where an existing meetinghouse is located at 771 West Fremont Avenue in the suburb of Sunnyvale. Plans call for replacing the meetinghouse with a single-story temple of approximately 30,000 square feet and an accompanying distribution center.2
Temple Announcement
On April 2, 2023, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Sunnyvale California Temple at the April 2023 General Conference. It was the 11th temple announced for the state. Sunnyvale is a suburb of San Jose, the third-largest city in California, located south of the San Francisco Bay area. It is part of Silicon Valley, a major technology hub. California is situated on the west coast of the United States and has nearly 730,000 Church members in approximately 1,150 congregations. Other temples in the state at the time of the announcement included the Feather River California Temple, Fresno California Temple, Los Angeles California Temple, Modesto California Temple, Newport Beach California Temple, Oakland California Temple, Redlands California Temple, Sacramento California Temple, San Diego California Temple, and Yorba Linda California Temple.3
Temple Facts
On December 15, 2025, the originally announced San Jose California Temple was renamed the Sunnyvale California Temple.
