Temple Announcement

On October 3, 2021, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Teton River Idaho Temple at the October 2021 General Conference. The Teton River Idaho Temple will be the ninth temple in Idaho. Idaho is home to more than 460,000 members of the Church in nearly 1,200 congregations. Early Church pioneers settled in Idaho in 1855. Several Church presidents are natives of Idaho, including Presidents Harold B. Lee, Ezra Taft Benson and Howard W. Hunter. Other temples in the state include the Twin Falls Idaho Temple, Boise Idaho Temple, Burley Idaho Temple, Idaho Falls Idaho Temple, Meridian Idaho Temple, Pocatello Idaho Temple, and Rexburg Idaho Temple.3

Temple Facts

The Teton River Idaho Temple will be the ninth temple built in Idaho, following the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple (1945), the Boise Idaho Temple (1984), the Rexburg Idaho Temple (2008), the Twin Falls Idaho Temple (2008), the Meridian Idaho Temple (2017), the Pocatello Idaho Temple (2021), the Burley Idaho Temple (under construction), and the Montpelier Idaho Temple (under construction).

The Teton River Idaho Temple will be located on the same street as the Rexburg Idaho Temple, about 3½ miles apart from each other.

When the Teton River Idaho Temple was announced, the population of Rexburg was approximately 39,500, making it the smallest city in the world to have two temples. Other small cities at the time with two temples included South Jordan, Utah (population 77,500); St. George, Utah (population 95,000); and Provo, Utah (population 115,000).

The Teton River Idaho Temple was announced in the 11th anniversary year of the Rexburg Idaho Temple.

The Teton River Idaho Temple will be the sixth temple built in the same city as another operating temple, the Rexburg Idaho Temple (2008), making Rexburg, Idaho, the sixth city in the world to have more than one temple, following South Jordan, Utah; Provo, Utah; Lima, Peru; St. George, Utah; and Guatemala City, Guatemala.
