Temple Announcement
On April 6, 2025, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Liverpool Australia Temple at the 195th Annual General Conference. It is the seventh temple announced for Australia and the second for Greater Sydney. At the time of the announcement, the Adelaide Australia Temple, Brisbane Australia Temple, Melbourne Australia Temple, Perth Australia Temple, and Sydney Australia Temple were in operation. The Brisbane Australia South Temple was in planning. Australia was home to nearly 160,000 Latter-day Saints in around 300 congregations.
The Church was introduced in Australia in 1840 when a British convert immigrated to the country. The first branch was organized in 1844, and a mission was established in 1851. Stakes in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, each organized in 1960, were among the first stakes established outside of North America.1
