Osaka is a large port city located in the heart of the main island of Honshu with a metropolitan area population of 19 million people. At the time of the announcement, there were more than 130,000 Latter-day Saints in Japan in about 230 congregations. The three dedicated temples were the Fukuoka Japan Temple, Sapporo Japan Temple, and Tokyo Japan Temple. The Okinawa Japan Temple was slated for dedication by Elder Gary E.
