On October 31, 2022, the location of the São Paulo East Brazil Temple was announced as a 10.7-acre site located at Av. Guilherme Giorgi, 1091 in Vila Carrão. Plans call for a two-story temple of approximately 46,050 square feet.1
On October 4, 2020, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct a second temple in São Paulo, Brazil, on the east side of the city. There are more than 30 stakes of the Church in São Paulo with many more in the surrounding region. Brazil is home to approximately 1.5 million Latter-day Saints, and it operates 35 missions—second only to the United States. In 1986, Brazil became the third country outside the United States to have 50 stakes. As of 2020, Brazil has 277 stakes.2
The São Paulo East Brazil Temple will be the twelfth temple built in Brazil and the third built in the state of São Paulo, following the São Paulo Brazil Temple (1978) and the Campinas Brazil Temple (2002).
The São Paulo East Brazil Temple will be the fifth temple built in the same city as another operating temple, the São Paulo Brazil Temple (1978), making São Paulo, Brazil, the fifth city in the world to have more than one temple, following South Jordan, Utah; Provo, Utah; Lima, Peru; and St. George, Utah.
The São Paulo East Brazil Temple will be the fourth temple built outside of the United States in the same metropolitan area as another operating temple, making Greater São Paulo the fourth metropolitan area outside of the United States with more than one temple, following the Lima metropolitan area in Peru, the Greater Manila Area in the Philippines, and the Guatemala City metropolitan area in Guatemala.
The São Paulo East Brazil Temple was announced in the 42nd anniversary year of the São Paulo Brazil Temple.
