Construction Status

The Rapid City South Dakota Temple is currently in the planning stages. No groundbreaking date has been announced.

On February 23, 2026, the official exterior rendering of the Rapid City South Dakota Temple was released to the public.


Temple Site

On February 23, 2026, the location for the Rapid City South Dakota Temple was announced as a 4.86-acre site located at the northeast corner of Mount Rushmore Road and Moon Meadows Drive in Rapid City. Plans call for an 11,800-square-foot, single-story temple and an accompanying ancillary building.1


Temple Announcement

On April 6, 2025, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to construct the Rapid City South Dakota Temple at the 195th Annual General Conference. It will be the first in the state where more than 11,500 members in approximately 30 congregations call home. Located in western South Dakota, Rapid City is the second-most populous city in South Dakota with a population of more than 80,000. In nearby Black Hills stands the iconic Mount Rushmore National Memorial.2
